There are several sources of protein used in protein bars. The three most commonly used are whey, egg whites and soy-based products. The version of the isolate used in Built Bars does not contain casein or lactose, which are naturally occurring components of milk that some people are allergic or digestively sensitive to.
During research into the bar's formula, soya was eliminated as a potential protein base, because although it is a complete protein in terms of amino acid structure, it has an unpleasant, bean flavor that is difficult to mask.
