Collagen is a connective tissue protein and constitutes about one third of all body proteins. Its molecule is composed of chains of amino acids (including glycine, proline, hydroxyproline). Its synthesis takes place in fibroblasts (the most numerous cells of connective tissue) with the participation of iron, vitamin C, copper and zinc. Collagen has many functions, including maintaining the proper structure and elasticity of joints, tendons, muscles, skin, hair and nails.
