Splenda® owes its sweetness to a substance with the chemical name sucralose, a zero-calorie sweetener that is 600 times sweeter than sugar that can be used as part of a healthy and balanced diet to help reduce the intake of sugars and carbohydrates.

Sucralose was discovered in 1976 in the laboratories of Tate&Lyle at Queen Elizabeth College and in the same year the process of its formation was patented. The process converts sugar (sucrose) into a calorie-free and nearly carbohydrate-free sweetener. One sachet ofSplenda® (equivalent to 2 teaspoons of sugar) contains fewer carbohydrates than any other commercially available sweetener (less than 0.5 grams), and this is the amount necessary to give the product the desired volume and tablet form.

In addition, Splenda® exhibits resistance to high temperatures (up to 220°C), which means that its chemical structure is not modified during high-temperature food preparation - making Splenda® a suitable product for use in baking cakes, for example (unlike aspartame).
