Skinny Food Protein Chips Cheese is a flavor that raises specific expectations. 'Cheese' chips can be either brilliant or completely artificial. That's why I opened this package with slight reservations. And I must admit – they surprised me positively.
They have a cheese and onion flavor, but in a plant-based version, based on yeast and yeast extract. This gives them a distinctly umami taste, slightly creamy, with a pleasant, delicately sweet onion note. There is no sharp, chemical 'cheese powder' here. It's more like roasted onion sprinkled with yeast flakes – intense, but still natural in taste.
You can taste garlic in the background, which slightly enhances the whole and gives it a dry character. This is not the taste of melted cheese from the cinema. It is more like a comfort food-style cheese topping, only lighter.
The texture? Very similar to the BBQ version – light, crispy, popped, not fried, so they are not heavy or greasy. They don't leave a film on your fingers and don't cause that feeling of 'overindulgence' that often comes with classic potato chips.
Macros are their strong point. As much as 30% of pea protein in the composition translates into 31.5 g of protein in 100 g. The entire 60 g package provides a really solid serving of protein. In addition, there is as much as 9.1 g of fiber in 100 g – something that is practically non-existent in traditional chips.
Compared to classic potato snacks:
- significantly more protein
- more fiber
- moderate fat content (15.9 g per 100 g)
- plant-based recipe
For me, this is a great option when I'm craving something cheesy but don't want to go for classic, fatty crisps. They work well as a snack at work, at the movies, after a workout – when you need something salty, but it's good to get something out of it nutritionally.
They're still chips. They still have salt and a distinctive flavor. But they're made in such a way that you can feel the difference. More filling, less heavy. And that cheese and onion flavor, which really works in the plant-based version.
