Elma Dental is a Greek sugar-free chewing gum with a unique addition in the form of a refreshing, breath-freshening mastic from Chios.
Mastic is a prototype of chewing gum originating from the tradition of the Mediterranean countries - translucent 'crystals' with a balsamic, cedar-pine aroma that freshens the breath are obtained from the resin of glutinous pistachios (Pistacia lentiscus - Greek for "schinos"). Although this plant grows wild throughout the Mediterranean, today southern Chios is the only place where pistachio mastic is systematically cultivated and where good quality mastic is produced.
Another name for the mastic is Chios tears (Greek: Μαστίχα) - for good reason, because chioska mastic is one of the most valued varieties of this unique material (other varieties are Levantine and Bombay mastic. The practice of chewing or chewing mastic, popular in ancient Greece, as a form of primary chewing gum to freshen the breath and stabilize the pH of the oral cavity. Chewing pure mastic was attributed to a tooth whitening effect and an antibacterial effect in the mouth, which, in combination with the digestive effect, contributed to fragrant breath. Since the 21st century, the specific, bitter taste of mastic has been used in the production of traditional Greek liqueurs (Mastichato), desserts, refreshing drinks, chewing gums, sweets and later ice cream, the mastic can also play a gelling role, eliminating the need to add starch or gelatine.
