Have you ever wondered where the name Thousand Island Sauce came from?

There are several theories that we will introduce here. :)

  • The sauce was supposed to be invented by Sophia LaLonde. Allegedly, the dressing was an addition to the dinner she prepared for her husband, and he was popularized (the dressing, not the husband) thanks to the best marketing method, word of mouth.
  • Another version says that it was created by a chef in a certain hotel. This is a sauce from the "whatever comes around" category, because it was supposed to be made on the spur of the moment from the ingredients available at hand.
  • Another theory suggests that the recipe is based on a classic French dressing, the recipe of which came to America with the colonizers.

There is also one important thing that connects all these assumptions - the region of the Thousand Islands on the St. Lawrence on the border between Canada and the USA. This unique area consists of over 1,800 islands, and one of its main attractions is the Boldt Castel, where, according to one version, the sauce in question was invented.

Researchers from the University of Wisconsin, who in 2010 theorized about the French provenance of 1000 island sauce, also came to the conclusion that the history of its origin is based mainly on oral tradition and varies depending on the island on which they are located. It can be said that it is already a legend and we will probably never know who came up with this tasty recipe. :)

However, perhaps the most important aspect of the whole thing is the taste. After all, we're not going to eat something just because it has mysterious origins! The base of the classic American dressing is mayonnaise, and the additives can be really different: lemon juice, paprika, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, cream, tomato puree ... It often also includes finely chopped vegetables, and even eggs or nuts! Some people try to simplify it to mayonnaise mixed with ketchup, but this is a profanation, because everyone knows that mayonnaise + ketchup make the simplest and best sauce ever! And the one from a thousand islands is right behind him!
